Remedies for Dangerous
Dog in the Neighborhood
A
dangerous dog in any neighborhood
is a difficult and, often times,
extremely dangerous situation. A
number of potential remedies are
available including:
Provide the dog owner with
notice and/or a warning regarding
their dangerous dog. You may consider
including a copy of your states
dog bite law as an illustration
of the liability exposure that this
dog creates for the owner.
- Pursue a small claims court
action if the dog has damaged property
or inflicted a very minor injury.
- File a complaint with the
appropriate authorities (e.g. police,
homeowners association, landlord).
- Report to animal control
officials.
- Consider consulting with
an attorney.
This notice should also be sent to
the resident of the property, with
a copy to the local animal control
department, a copy to the injured
person, and a copy to the owner
of the property if different from
the resident.
